Product Care & Help Guide

Storage Trunks Care & Maintenance Guide

At Finsbury Furniture, our storage trunks are designed for practical household organisation and everyday durability. Regular care can help maintain their appearance, smooth functionality, and structural condition over time.

Please Note: Always follow any product-specific care label or instructions supplied with your trunk. Where product-specific instructions differ from this general guide, the product-specific instructions should take priority.

1. Placement & Initial Setup

  • Level Positioning: Place your storage trunk on a flat, even floor surface. Operating lid hinges on an uneven surface can put diagonal strain on the hinge fittings over time.
  • Floor Protection: If protective glides or felt pads are supplied with your trunk, ensure they are securely fitted beneath the base corners to prevent scuffing delicate flooring.
  • Heat Sources & Moisture: Avoid placing wooden or upholstered trunks directly against active radiators or in damp basements. Excessive humidity or direct heat can affect timber moisture content and finish integrity.

2. Surface Cleaning & Material Care

Timber & Painted Trunks

Dust exterior panels regularly using a dry, soft, lint-free cloth. For deeper cleans, wipe with a well-wrung damp cloth using mild neutral soap, then buff completely dry immediately. Never allow standing liquids or damp laundry to sit directly on wood surfaces.

Upholstered Ottoman Trunks

Vacuum padded lid tops regularly on low suction using an upholstery brush. For accidental spills, blot immediately with a clean, dry absorbent white cloth without aggressive scrubbing. Do not soak the cushioning foam.

3. Hardware & Hinge Maintenance

Periodic Fastener & Hinge Check

Because storage trunks have moving lids, hinges and stay-brackets naturally experience repetitive movement. We recommend checking accessible screws and hinge fasteners approximately every 3 to 6 months, gently tightening with a screwdriver where necessary to prevent hinge looseness. Do not overtighten.

4. Safe Domestic Use & Weight Capacities

  • Weight Distribution: Distribute stored contents evenly across the interior base. Avoid overloading beyond reasonable domestic capacity.
  • Seating Safety: Only sit on storage trunks specifically rated as "Ottoman Benches" or seating trunks. Do not sit on decorative trunks with thin or domed lids.
  • Child Safety Caution: Never allow children to play or climb inside storage trunks. Ensure safety lid-stays remain properly connected to prevent lids from dropping unexpectedly.
